Give Transit a Try: rabbittransit Celebrates National Dump the Pump Day and Support PA Transit Day
JUST HOP ON THURSDAY, JUNE 21

York, PA rabbittransit, along with other local transit agencies and Commuter Services of South Central Pennsylvania, is urging commuters to “dump the pump” on Thursday, June 21, and take transit instead of driving alone to work. Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2007 National Dump the Pump Day is a day which advocates people ride public transportation to help improve the environment and to conserve gasoline.
Coinciding with this national initiative is the statewide Support PA Transit Day, which also encourages residents to take a stand for transit. Funding for public transportation in Pennsylvania has not kept pace with inflation over the last ten years and transit systems are now facing budget shortfalls.
Coordinated by the Pennsylvania Public Transportation Association (PPTA), this membership association supports adequate funding for Pennsylvanian’s transportation network, and recognizes that both public transportation and highway and bridges are in crisis due to inadequate funding for operations, capital improvements, and maintenance.
“When it comes right down to it, it’s about developing a sustainable program that creates mobility options for all Pennsylvanians,” summarizes Dennis Louwerse, PPTA Chairman.
rabbittransit will be distributing Support Transit buttons and literature to riders onboard its buses and at its downtown transfer center this week in recognition of these events.
Transit agencies partnering with rabbittransit and Commuter Services in support of “Dump the Pump Day” and “Support PA Transit Day” include: County of Lebanon Transit Authority (COLT); Red Rose Transit Authority (Lancaster); and Capital Area Transit (CAT) in Cumberland and Dauphin counties.
“Public transportation plays a vital role in improving our environment, our economy and our future,” says Richard Farr, rabbittransit's Executive Director. “On June 21, people can make a difference by trying transit and encouraging friends and family to do so, too.”
