FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE SMART START TO HEALTH AND WEALTH:
RIDE rabbittransit FREE DURING BIKE TO WORK WEEK

York, PA In an effort to support a healthier environment and a reduction in our energy consumption, rabbittransit encourages everyone to participate in Bike to Work Week, May 12th 16th. Any passenger, who boards a rabbittransit fixed route bus with a bike during this week, will ride for free.
However, that free ride might change your life. One passenger used his bike as part of his commute to reduce his impact on both the environment and his weight. Each day he rode his bike to the Park and Ride on Haines road near Kmart, where he picked up the rabbitEXPRESS to Harrisburg. By bringing his bike along, he is able to finish his trip to work on his bike. At the time he reported losing 100 lbs. while saving money by using public commuting.
rabbittransit received a special grant to install bike racks on all of its fixed route buses in the fall of 2004. Each bus is equipped with a rack that can transport two bikes on the front of the bus. There is no extra cost to transport a bike. The bike racks are especially designed for transit use and are easy for bike riders to use. When the racks are full, bikes are invited onboard permitting space is available.
“Bike racks give our community more options. Now, the public can get even further on the bus or their bike because of the ability to combine these two modes of transportation” commented Richard Farr, rabbittransit Executive Director. “More riders have found that a rabbittransit commute is a smart commute - not only for the lower impact on the environment, but also the increased personal health benefits and savings on fuel costs.”
Joe Stafford, Executive Director of the Bicycle Access Council, states, “Bikes and buses make sense for today’s commuters. It can save money and promote a healthy lifestyle it can work.”
rabbittransit partnered with Gung Ho Bikes to offer 20 refurbished bicycles to York County residents who will use transit and the bike to access their employment. A 2007 service survey stated that 25% of passengers are traveling farther to and from bus stops. This fact can be supported by the 34% increase in the number of bikes being used on the fixed route bus system that’s over 300 average bikes boarding per month. Applications for bikes can be picked up at rabbittransit’s downtown transfer center.
