SERVICES

  • rabbittransit is introducing 10 hybrid gas-electric buses into its paratransit fleet -- the first Pennsylvania transit system to do so as part of a pilot project. These vehicles offer:
    • a 32% reduction in green house gas emissions.
    • a 40% miles per gallon improvement versus a conventional gasoline vehicle.
    • a 75% reduction in fuel consumption during idle.
    • and, they are nearly emissions free for passenger pick-ups as a result of all-electric operation of the vehicle.
  • rabbittransit’s fixed route and existing paratransit vehicles operate on biodiesel. Biodiesel burns cleaner and has up to 80% fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuel.  Biodiesel is also biodegradable and is made from domestic vegetable oil, which fosters energy independence.

  • rabbitEXPRESS Busrabbittransit offers its rabbitEXPRESS service which transports commuters between York and Harrisburg. This is the equivalent of nearly 100 cars being removed from the road each work day.

  • New commuter bus service between York and Northern Maryland will begin February 2009. It has the potential to remove 165 single occupancy cars from the road.

  • rabbittransit operates the Green Machine service subsidized by the York College of Pennsylvania Student Senate to encourage students to connect to downtown and leave their cars on campus.

  • rabbittransit launched a new vanpool program to help commuters reduce their carbon footprints by 50%. By utilizing this transportation alternative, commuters can reduce their ‘footprints’ by nearly 10 metric tonnes per person, per year.  On average, every American contributes approximately 22 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. This can be compared to the world average of 6 tonnes per capita according to United Nation statistics.

  • rabbittransit promotes the use of bicycles and has bike racks installed on the front of every vehicle specially designed for transit use. This enables the public to go even farther on the bus or their bike because of the ability to combine these two modes of transportation.

  • Hop a Riderabbittransit accesses 4 park and ride locations. It owns and operates one of the park and ride facilities and coordinates with the managing organizations of three other park and ride areas.

  • rabbittransit partners with Commuter Services of South Central PA to reach out to employers in the area and offer transportation alternatives. One option encourages employers to purchase employee bus passes to reduce personal vehicles on the road.

VEHICULAR/MAINTENANCE INITIATIVES

  • rabbittransit adheres to a standardized, scheduled maintenance program for all vehicles to maintain their energy efficiency, including changing oil, fuel and air filters.

  • rabbittransit’s drivers practice fuel-saving driving habits.

  • All new vehicles are fitted with diesel particulate filters for cleaner burning diesel engines.

  • rabbittransit’s bus roofs are painted white to reflect heat.

  • rabbittransit recycles its used oil in an oil burning furnace.

  • rabbittransit uses biodegradable detergent in its bus wash.

PAPER

  • Bus Route Maprabbittransit’s newest route schedules are printed on paper which is certified by the Sustainable Forestery Initiative (SFI). While recovered fiber is an attractive choice, it usually only makes up a small percentage of any paper product. An SFI label completes the equation by confirming the rest of the wood fiber is from a responsible source.

  • rabbittransit distributes email newsletters to the public to replace mailed printed versions.

  • rabbittransit employees use fast draft printer settings to reduce the amount of ink being used.

  • rabbittransit utilizes direct deposit to reduce paper paychecks.

  • rabbittransit employees use note paper recycled from internal printed materials.

  • rabbittransit uses email to communicate to employees instead of paper flyers and saves data on electronic files when possible.

  • rabbittransit uses washable dishware for its board meetings and employee lunches instead of paper plates.

ENERGY

  • rabbittransit utilizes high efficiency lighting in offices using less energy.

  • Part of rabbittransit’s office roof is painted white to reflect heat.

  • rabbittransit employees turn off lights and computers in the evening and over weekends to conserve energy.

WASTE

  • Recycle glass, plastic, cans hererabbittransit sends its used printer cartridges to be recycled.

  • rabbittransit began a recycling program within its offices to recycle plastic, glass and paper items.

GREEN INITIATIVES IN DEVELOPMENT

  • rabbittransit will transition to the use of green cleaning products.

  • rabbittransit plans to expand its recycling program to include the Transfer Center which will offer areas for recycling for the public.

  • rabbittransit plans to display signage inside vehicles educating riders about its Eco-Initiative/Green Plan and provide tips for riders to reduce their carbon footprint.

  • rabbittransit will also be introducing green tips on the back of its new hybrid vehicles.

  • rabbittransit will implement quarterly check-ins with office personnel to ensure continued participation in its green tactics.

  • rabbittransit will internally announce green initiatives and accomplishments through company safety newsletter.

  • rabbittransit will perform an annual audit on green initiatives and set green goals for the following year.
